I am just going to Post a comment because our lead blogger (A)has not done so.

I find it intresting that the author has such strong views about children's reading. He makes refernce in his book to the book series goosebumps by saying, " ...What is offensive to about such books as the Goosebumps series is not their horrific content but that the purchase and reading of such books can lead to an addiction whereby the young, curious reader is transformed into a homogenized reader, dependent on certain expectations and codes that make it appear the world is manageable and comforting(Zipes, Pg. 8)." Are you a little confused here? Well i am. I thought we wanted our children addicted to books rather than the television. I would prefer my daughter to be engaged in a book rarther than television. When i was a child i read the goosebumps series and not for one second did i relax after reading it and think "wow! this book makes me feel like the world is much more manageable and comforting than i thought."
I feel somewhat confused when i read from Zipes. I feel like what he wants from author and publishers is just wishful thinking. This is country is a freeworld, people are allowed to write what they want and sell it. If you don't want your kids to read it, then raise them to know the difference. I personally do not think there is anything wrong with buying books for my daughter and the end result is usually the same. I think i would be sad for me to buy her a child's book where someone dies at the end and that is suppose to be the happy ending we are seeking. To me books are made for imagination purposes. You read to escape, and you get into this world where the rules and everything are different, and i do not see anything wrong with that.
The author alos makes continuous slams about the way marketing is done for books and commercializing them. My major is business, my minor is marketing and to me is want a book to sell, you have to commercialize it adn you have to market it hard, otherwise your just another book that gets shoved behind some shelf somewhere that no one cares about. I am all for good marketing stragties, i don't know how anyone is going to care about the book unless it is marketed in a strong way, and in order for the product to be marketed apprpriately the conmsumer has to be in place, in which they can be menatally manipulated by buy this product for themselves and others.
I understand tha this blog may be a little all over the place, but i am doing this at 8am and trying to get ready for school, and most of all i had to intentions on starting off the blog.
But tell me do you agree with what Zipes says that it's offensive that are readers are being turned in to think that the world in managable and comforting?
Again i state that i do not know how that would be possible, when children are exposed to the realities of the worl. going back to page two and reading what those children said about how they percieve the world. To me it seems that they don't think the world is overly comforting.
I think it was also intresting that Zipes talks about our children being raised by televison(Zipes,Pg3). I know i have done it before and i have tried to break the habbit and be more hands on with her. I think the misconception is that if it's educational then it's okay. Part of me can reason with that because they really do have some great televison shows for children that address certain issues or things you would like to teach your children, for instances, sharing and respect and colors adn numbers. However i think it is more important to also take a child out of that environment and teach them in other ways without the help of the television. I do believe that television has a very good way of dumbing down our generation and has succeeded very well already.

I also agree. I believe that the author repeates himself alot and he does have strong feelings about this but why? Like said before, this could have been said in less words. Adults could read what they are attracted to and write what they want to write. Who knows maybe if not so many modifications are done on a book it could attract a different croud. children should be able to what they want as long as they have permission from their gaurdian or parent. Its nice to be able to have a book about fun and excitment and adventures. "Childrens literature" can be that for adults to escape from the world for a little bit.
So why does the author havae such strong feelings about this topic? I don't know.

i also agree with the statement that children should be allow to read what their parent allows them. i was also confused by his statement of getting addictive to certain type of books. but once the child get bored of that type they will eventually find a different type of book to read.
i agree that T.V is dumbing our children, but there are some show that teaches our children good moral or academic materials.
